The reverse french is a french-style manicure but flipped: the colour line goes at the base of the nail (the lunula) instead of at the tip. Modern version of the most classic design, perfect for those who want something recognisable with a contemporary twist.
The trick is in the contrast. It works especially well with contrasting tones: black over nude, red over milky, brown over beige, gold over pale pink. The line can be thin (more editorial reading) or thick (more graphic), and can follow the natural curve of the lunula or be drawn straight.
At Cool Nails Gràcia we work it freehand with fine brush, no stencils, allowing us to adapt the shape to each specific nail. Combines especially well with classic french on alternating nails (half and half) or with coloured micro french for a sophisticated effect.
Variants trending in 2026
This year we see three variants being requested a lot: micro reverse french (very thin line, almost imperceptible), coloured reverse french (lilac, gold, wine instead of classic white), and double french (combination of reverse + classic on the same nail, separated by a fine metallic line).
short or medium nails, clients bored of single colour but not wanting elaborate nail art. Combines especially well with contrasting tones.
